Co-creating a Safer Delta: Rebuild by design
‘Rebuild-by-Design’: an innovative programme for the design, funding, and implementation of a resilient future
The Dutch delta approach as starting-point to rebuild New York after Hurricane Sandy
Following Hurricane Sandy’s devastation of areas of New York in 2012, the city was left with huge challenges and many questions. In the wake of the storm, Dutch engineer Henk Ovink established ‘Rebuild-by-Design’: an innovative programme for the design, funding, and implementation of a resilient future for the worst affected areas. With support from authorities in the United States, Ovink marshalled the world’s leading experts to evaluate the region’s needs, placing civic leaders and communities at the heart of the design process. Seven projects are currently underway that will ultimately reduce the vulnerability of the New York metropolitan delta. In line with the Dutch delta approach, multi-stakeholder groups remain involved within these projects over the longer term, to rebuild the NY delta.
