An inspiring water supply system: Dune water machine
As cities grow, the challenge of finding safe and reliable sources of water increases.
The delta’s natural assets as a smart source for a clean water supply system
As cities grow, the challenge of finding safe and reliable sources of water increases. To secure a high-quality water supply, a cluster of inventive artificial recharge systems has been developed in coastal dune areas in the Netherlands. In artificial recharge, surface water is added to ground water supplies in open basins, from where it gradually percolates down through the dune sand. From there it is purified and then distributed to cities. This simple approach has great potential to quench the thirst of an urbanizing world. By creating reliable groundwater reserves in dunes or a river’s sandy banks, high quality water reserves can be accessed in times of drought and other calamities.
