Cellulosic Bioethanol – Advanced Biofuels

Fossil fuel energy is a finite resource and not renewable. Deriving biofuels from locally grown sources and using them as alternatives to petrol products makes cellulosic ethanol an effective strategy for reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

In an effort to stimulate the sustainable development of the transportation and logistics sector, POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels, a joint venture between Dutch firm Royal DSM and US company POET, has developed a cost-competitive fuel that cuts emissions, creates jobs and increases energy security.

Agri-waste for bio-based fossil-fuel alternative

'Advanced Biofuels' is the first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant that has opened for business and builds on the strengths of both companies to make cellulosic bio-ethanol competitive with grain ethanol - the most competitive renewable liquid transportation fuel on the market today. Their revolutionary technology converts agricultural residue into renewable fuel. This process takes place in a joint venture plant where baled corncobs, leaves, husk and stalk are converted into renewable fuel. This development marks a huge step forward in the wider adoption of biofuels. Project LIBERTY is the flagship plant in POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels' plan to license this technology to companies across the U.S. and around the world. It processes 770 tons of corncobs, leaves, husk and some stalk daily to produce 20 million gallons of cellulosic ethanol per year, later ramping-up to 25 million gallons per year.
